The speculation and rumour of Bitcoin being integrated into Ebay has been a long time running discussion point, even back in 2013 there were many baseless stories circulating reddit and the bitcointalk forum about how Bitcoin maybe accepted by Ebay soon, normally based on some off-hand comment made by someone within the Ebay or Paypal management. However, as many quite rightly pointed out, Bitcoin was never going to be accepted by EBay, not while one of Bitcoins main competitors, Paypal, were Ebay’s primary payment system.
Well, now at last Paypal is being put aside as Ebay begin integrating a new primary payments processor.
Unless your one of the minority who are not signed up to Ebay you would of received the following message from Ebay over the past week:
‘…eBay is happy to announce plans to further improve the customer experience by intermediating payments on our Marketplace platform. In doing so, eBay will manage the payments flow, simplifying the end-to-end experience for both buyers and sellers. We have signed an agreement with Adyen, a leading global payments processor, to become our primary payments processing partner……’
Adyen will be Ebay’s primary default method by the end of 2018, whats interesting is the vast number of possible payment methods that Adyen provide, including Bitcoin via Bitpay. This addition to the Adyen payment methods was announced back in 2015.
Whether or not this will be enabled in Ebay’s system is unknown and we are unlikely to find such details out anytime soon.
The Lightning Network for Bitcoin will allow for low cost, instantaneous payments for platforms such as EBay and with more and more nodes going live everyday the LN is likely to develop far quicker than anyone could of imagined. So the concept of Ebay and other platforms such as Amazon accepting Bitcoin payments is no longer becoming just the hopeful far off dreams of crypto enthusiasts.
The future is bright, the futures Bitcoin!
